Warm Jam-Filled Wholemeal Roll
Warm Jam-Filled Wholemeal Roll
This quick oven treat turns a soft wholemeal roll into a warm, jam-filled pastry-style snack. The outside is lightly coated with cinnamon sugar, while a small pocket of reduced-sugar jam heats in the center. It is best served shortly after baking, when the crust is crisp and the middle is soft.
Recipe details
- Yield: 1 filled roll
- Prep: 7 minutes
- Bake: 8–10 minutes
- Equipment: small baking tray, parchment paper, paring knife, teaspoon, pastry brush or oil mister, small bowl
Ingredients
- 1 soft wholemeal roll, about 60 grams
- 2 teaspoons reduced-sugar strawberry or raspberry jam
- 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons granulated sweetener
- 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon, optional
- Neutral nonstick cooking spray, as needed
Method
- Heat the oven to 350°F (180°C) and line a small tray with parchment.
- Using the tip of a paring knife, cut a small opening in one side of the roll. Work the blade gently inside to make a pocket without cutting through the opposite side. Do not remove much bread, because the crumb helps contain the jam.
- Stir the jam to loosen it. Spoon it into the pocket a little at a time, pushing it toward the center with the handle of the teaspoon. Pinch the opening lightly closed. Wipe away any jam on the surface so it does not burn.
- Mist the roll on all sides with a thin, even coat of cooking spray. Mix the sugar, sweetener, and cinnamon in the small bowl, then roll and press the bread in the mixture so the coating adheres.
- Place the seam or opening side up on the tray. Bake for 8–10 minutes, turning the tray after 5 minutes, until the outside is crisp and lightly browned. Let it stand for 3 minutes before eating; the jam will be much hotter than the bread.
Best results
A soft, unsliced roll works better than one with a thick artisan crust because it can be hollowed without splitting. Avoid overfilling: more than 2 teaspoons jam is likely to leak. If jam escapes during baking, let it cool on the tray rather than touching it immediately.
The coating needs only a light mist of spray. A wet surface dissolves the sugar before the crust can crisp. If the roll remains pale after 10 minutes, move it to an upper oven rack for 1–2 minutes and watch closely. The goal is a toasted exterior, not a hard shell.
Variations and storage
Use any smooth jam by the same measure; large fruit pieces can tear the pocket. For a plain sugar coating, omit the cinnamon. A standard soft white roll also works, although it will have a different flavor and texture.
Make only what you plan to serve. If necessary, cool completely and refrigerate airtight for up to 2 days, then reheat at 325°F (165°C) for 5–7 minutes. Do not microwave for long intervals because the jam can develop dangerously hot spots.
