Chocolate Caramel Yogurt Jars

Chocolate Caramel Yogurt Jars

These chilled dessert jars layer vanilla yogurt, crisp graham crumbs, caramel, and chocolate for a cookie-bar-inspired treat without relying on a branded candy. Adding the crumbs shortly before serving preserves their crunch; assembling them earlier creates a softer, cheesecake-like layer instead.

Equipment and timing

  • Four 8-ounce jars or dessert glasses
  • Medium bowl
  • Small microwave-safe bowl
  • Whisk

Yield: 4 jars
Preparation: 15 minutes
Chilling: 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 cups thick plain Greek yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup or honey
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of fine salt
  • 4 whole graham-cracker sheets, crushed into coarse crumbs
  • 1/4 cup caramel sauce
  • 1/4 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 2 teaspoons milk

Method

  1. Whisk yogurt, maple syrup, vanilla, and salt until smooth. Taste and add another teaspoon of sweetener if the yogurt is especially tart.
  2. Place chocolate chips and milk in the microwave-safe bowl. Heat for 15 seconds, stir, then repeat in 10-second bursts just until smooth. Let cool for 3 to 5 minutes; it should remain fluid but not be hot.
  3. Divide half the yogurt among four jars. Add half the graham crumbs, then drizzle each with half the caramel and chocolate. Repeat the yogurt, caramel, and chocolate layers.
  4. Cover and chill for 30 minutes. Add the remaining graham crumbs immediately before serving for a crisp finish.

Layering and substitutions

Thick yogurt keeps the layers distinct. If yours pours rather than mounds, strain it in a cheesecloth-lined sieve in the refrigerator for 1 hour. Vanilla yogurt may replace plain yogurt; omit the maple syrup initially and sweeten only after tasting. Crushed digestive biscuits or crisp oat cookies can replace graham crackers in the same measured amount.

For a looser chocolate drizzle, stir in milk a few drops at a time. Water can make melted chocolate seize, so use milk. If the chocolate does tighten, warm it gently and whisk in another teaspoon of milk. Chopped toasted almonds add crunch but change the dessert’s allergen profile.

Make-ahead and storage

For the neatest presentation, pipe or spoon the yogurt without smearing the jar walls. The yogurt mixture and sauces can be portioned up to a day ahead, but reserve the final crumbs. Refrigerate at 40°F/4°C or colder and use within 3 days. Do not leave the jars at room temperature for more than 2 hours. Freezing is not recommended because yogurt may become grainy when thawed.

For transport, use jars with tight lids and carry the reserved crumbs in a separate small container. Keep the desserts upright in a cooler with ice packs. Add crumbs only when ready to eat, especially in warm or humid conditions.

Allergen note

Graham crackers usually contain wheat, and the yogurt and chocolate may contain milk. Check every package when serving someone with an allergy. Use certified gluten-free crisp cookies for a gluten-free variation and a suitable plant-based yogurt and chocolate for a dairy-free version.
